“George Stubbs (1724 - 1806) was an English artist and scientist. In 1766, Stubb’s published The Anatomy of the Horse, an anatomical study of the horse resulting from the observation of animals the artist dissected himself, assisted by his partner Mary Spencer, in an isolated Lincolnshire farmhouse. This engraving depicts a side view of the first stage of dissection with just the skin removed, revealing the muscles with extraordinary skill and precision.”
